NAIDOC Staff award and recognition 2024

For many years, Marist180 has taken the opportunity that NAIDOC week provides, to reflect on the work of Marist180 staff, and highlight the work and contribution of staff through NAIDOC Recognition Awards. These awards are in addition to our NAIDOC Community celebration, which occurred on Friday July 26. In 2023 and this year we have chosen to gather at La Valla, Blacktown, and present these awards on August 9, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This date was adopted in December 1994 by the UN General Assembly, in order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups. UNESCO reminds us:

Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world and own, occupy or use some 22% of global land area. Numbering at least 370-500 million, Indigenous Peoples represent the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. Despite their cultural differences, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. Many Indigenous Peoples continue to be confronted with marginalization, extreme poverty and other human rights violations.’

We were delighted to have 12 different staff nominated for their efforts in ‘going above and beyond in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People involved in Marist180 this year.’ Staff were present in large numbers, offering their support, recognition and affirmation of the great work of impressive colleagues at the celebration.

There were many wonderful and inspiring words offered in the nomination process. What follows is an excerpt, a snapshot of what was offered for and about our 3 Awardees:

Kelly Anderson

‘Kelly is committed to and has proven to be committed to all our clients in Hays. Kelly supports and assists clients in living skills, gaining knowledge about their country and Aboriginal culture. Kelly participates in all aspects of culture and is proactive in her day-to-day tasks and her role in Specialist Homelessness Services. Liam Bayode

‘House Manager Liam Bayode has created a Cultural space in our House. A space where the young people can retreat to and learn about the Aboriginal and Indigenous cultures. Liam has filled this space with books, flags and the Aboriginal Declaration of Child Rights. Liam deserves a Recognition Award for his dedication and contribution, as he is passionate about educating young people and colleagues on and about Aboriginal culture.’

Naomi Warren

‘Naomi is an incredible House Manager supporting the young people and the team within Freehill. Naomi's strengths include listening and actioning what is needed to promote a safe and nurturing environment. Naomi's passion and advocacy for young people particularly the young Aboriginal males she works with is extraordinary.’

Naomi was unwell and unable to attend the gathering.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, offers these words as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is marked for the 30th time:

On this day, let us remember that Indigenous peoples are actors of change, guardians of natural resources and carriers of unique worldviews, knowledge and skills. We must protect their traditions and ways of life – while respecting their rights.’

Congratulations and well-done Kelly, Liam and Naomi. You are, in the course of your work, your service, going above and beyond for the First Nations young people in your care, and colleagues, and, at once, heeding the call of Azoulay.
