Some two years ago, our team at Daramu recognised a need, and were moved to action. Many local young First Nations people were not accessing the range of services and programs available to them, designed for them, to thrive.
One element of this was limited knowledge regarding systems and services; another was some level of reluctance or suspicion in relation to government and/or institutional providers. To this end, a bi-monthly hub was established, where a range of service providers-government and other-gathered at Daramu, and created a relaxed, welcoming, ‘one-stop shop’.
This hub has been so popular and well patronised, it has outgrown the space! In the second half of 2024 the Daramu team partnered with Ngroo Education and Real Futures, and created the Community Connection Hub, which launched on February 18, at Emerton Recreation Centre.

One of our Daramu Education and Youth Justice Caseworkers, Alajah Wright, welcomed those assembled on behalf of the organising committee. Below is an excerpt of the excellent welcome Alajah offered:
‘My name is Alajah, and I’m a Caseworker with Daramu. It’s truly an honour to be here today to speak about something that holds great significance for all of us – the Community Connection Hub.
The Community Connection Hub is a vital initiative where multiple services unite, working hand-in-hand to support and uplift the vibrant community of Mount Druitt. The core committee behind this hub includes Daramu, Real Futures, and NGROO. Together, we aim to ensure that every individual has access to the resources, guidance, and the support they need to thrive.

This journey started with a hub run from the Daramu office, where we began initial discussions with Alicia Johnson from Revenue NSW. Alicia has been pivotal in supporting the community by helping to establish and facilitate several hubs across various areas. Her ongoing support has been a driving force behind the success of these hubs, and we’re grateful for her dedication to making sure the community’s needs are met. In addition, I would like to thank Jamie Petschy for sponsoring the Connection Hub, as well as Blacktown City Council and Emerton Recreation Centre for allowing us to use their space to support and run our Community Connection Hub, bi-monthly for 2025.

At the heart of the Community Connection Hub is the belief that community is everything. It’s about connecting people to the services they need, providing support, and empowering everyone to make informed decisions for their future. Whether it’s assistance with employment, housing, mental health, or simply a place to reach out for help, this hub is here for you.
As a caseworker, I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of services coming together. It makes a difference. By collaborating and combining our strengths, we can provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach to support the needs of this community.

The Hub is a space of hope, support, and connection – where we work alongside you, not just for you. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier Mt Druitt, where everyone has access to the tools and resources needed for success.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing the positive changes we can make together through the Community Connection Hub.’
We thank and acknowledge everyone who has offered their support in creating this Hub.
Together, and by association, we are ‘creating positive change’.Â
